Baby found dead on Melbourne beach

A baby has been found dead on a Melbourne beach by a passer-by.

The infant – which police believe to be a newborn – was found on a beach in Seaford, in Melbourne’s southeast, about 4.30pm on Wednesday afternoon, police said in a statement.

There are concerns for the health and wellbeing of the baby's mother, and police are asking her to make contact as soon as possible.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and are yet to identify the infant.
