’Tragic’: baby found dead in hot car
Western Australia’s Premier says the death of a baby found inside a car in the Kimberley is “unbelievably sad.”
Investigations are under way after the one-year-old child was found unresponsive in a car in Fitzroy Crossing on Tuesday afternoon.
Those who discovered the baby immediately took the child to Fitzroy Crossing Hospital, less than 200m away, but the infant could not be revived.
Asked about the incident during a media conference on Wednesday, Roger Cook said his heart went out to everyone involved.
“Not just the families involved, but also the work colleagues involved in this incident,” Mr Cook said.
“This is incredibly sad news and our hearts go out to everyone involved.”
Police were first made aware of the incident after receiving a call from the hospital at 3pm.
No charges had been laid, and investigations are continuing.
The temperature in Fitzroy Crossing about 3pm Tuesday exceeded 30C.
WA’s Police Commissioner Col Blanch says it appears to be an “horrific” and “tragic” accident.
“It’s such a sad story and certainly tragic for a small community like Fitzroy Crossing,” Mr Blanch told the media on Wednesday morning.
“Major crime are heading up today. That is a matter of course. We would always go to a death like that. The investigation is ongoing but I hope to have more information in the coming days.
“There are certainly so many people in Fitzroy Crossing hurting today and that’s why we are trying to be very respectful to how they are feeling because it’s a really, really difficult time for a small community.
“This really rocks a community like that very hard. That’s why our police up there are doing the best they can to spend as much time with community and walk them through this.”
The Department of Communities office in Fitzroy Crossing is closed while the investigation is carried out.
A Department spokesperson declined to comment further.
