Baby dies after mum turned away from hospital

A pregnant woman has lost her unborn child after being repeatedly turned away from a Central Queensland hospital.

The grieving family claim Rockhampton base hospital staff were negligent in their treatment leading up to the tragedy.

After a problem free pregnancy, 26-year-old Emma Green’s the baby will now be stillborn.

Emma and her partner Eldean had even picked a name; Waylan.

"Emma and Eldean are both mad on country music its off Waylan Jennings," her mum Jane told 7News

Emma's due date was Monday May 6th.

At the Rockhampton Base Hospital on that day, she underwent a minor procedure to start her labour but afterwards was sent home.

"She rang up concerned like the doctor did not know whether the baby's head was up or down whether he was facing front or rear," aunt Sue said.

Told labour had not progressed, she returned to hospital, only to be told her labour had not progressed.

Her family says she was again sent home after medical staff said they couldn't induce her over the weekend.

On Monday morning, with her contractions now coming every eight minutes, Emma once again returned to the base hospital.

Her mother says Emma was told there were no beds available and to come back on Tuesday morning.

She was then seven days overdue.

"Then they just sent her away, no-one even checked her - a nurse doctor or nothing they were told to go away because they were busy," Jane said.

By 10am on Tuesday, the baby had stopped kicking.

Despite Emma's desperate pleas to be seen, her family says Rockhampton hospital staff told her to return at 4pm when a scan revealed baby Wylan had died

"She's as well as can be expected, she's not doing too good," Emma’s mother said of her current state.

"This sort of sh*t in public hospitals needs to stop. Someone needs to fix it."

A spokesman for Health minister Lawrence Springborg referred 7News to the local hospital board as "they are the people who are accountable".

"When outcomes are not as we would all have hoped, we undertake a detailed analysis to look for opportunities to improve the services we provide," Rockhampton hospital's medical director said in a statement.
