Australia’s richest suburbs revealed

Meanwhile, the most disadvantaged people are living in rural and remote parts of Queensland and the Northern Territory.

That’s according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which has used the 2021 census data to rank local government areas based on income, education and employment to determine ‘socio-economic advantage’.

Six of the 10 most advantaged areas were in Sydney, with the 53,496 people living in Woollahra – in the city’s eastern suburbs – topping the list.

Taking in exclusive suburbs Vaucluse and Point Piper, the local council area is home to billionaires Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, and former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Across the harbour, Mosman and its 28,329 residents, came in second.

Peppermint Grove, home to 1597 people on the Perth’s Swan River, was eighth.

Neighbouring Nedlands – which includes billionaires Gina Rinehart and Kerry Stokes among its 22,132 residents – was ninth.

The Darwin Waterfront Precinct, home to just 293 people – mostly in luxury apartments – came in fourth.

The rest of greater Darwin was among the top 13 per cent – while the rest of the Northern Territory made up a significant chunk of the most disadvantaged areas.

Just over 100km south of Darwin, the Belyuen area – home to 149 people – is the most disadvantaged part of the NT, and the third most disadvantaged area in the country.

Woorabinda – an Indigenous community home to 1019 people southwest of Rockhampton – topped the list as the most disadvantaged community.

In total, Queensland is home to six of the most disadvantaged areas.

Four local areas in the NT round out the list for the ten most disadvantaged areas.
