Aussies lose it over receipt detail from 16 years ago

Finding hidden treasures in unexpected places can often be riveting but one man's recent discovery of an old receipt has left him with mixed emotions – with many Aussies lamenting just how much things have changed in a decade and a half.

The promotions printed in vibrant green and red ink on the well-preserved receipt were found in his "nan's car from 2008" and highlight just how different prices were long before the recent cost of living pressures began really mounting.

Fine print on the Big W receipt clearly shows it to be from 2008. On the back of the docket the first promotion was offered by a hairdressing salon which advertised free add-on foils with any cut or colour while a local butcher in the NSW Hunter Region offered one kilogram worth of free sausages if a customer spent $30 or more in their shop.

Another promotion was advertised by Pizza Hut where customers could snag themselves three large pizzas for only $15.95 if they were willing to pick-up their order. Meanwhile Maccas offered hungry diners two Big Mac burgers for the mere price of $5 — a stark contrast to the same burger now setting you back $7.75 without fries.

"Oh how prices have changed," the man wrote online, sharing an image of the old receipt to Reddit.

Aussies 'yearn' for cheaper prices of yesteryear

The receipt brought a wave of nostalgia for those online with many saying they had completely "forgot you used to get deals on the back of receipts".

"Oh I miss docket deals! I forgot they even existed," one person wrote, noting how "old and sad" they feel after being reminded of the notable change in prices compared to today.

"How I yearn for 2008" another chimed in. "Take me the f**k back," a third Aussie joked.

Research released by Finder in 2023 found that food was one of the biggest money concerns for Aussies and many were changing their shopping habits to mediate the impact of the cost of living.
