An Australian tourist who went missing for three days near a popular tourist attraction in Kazakhstan has been found dead.

Jake Michael Herd was last seen on Sunday when he left his hostel to hike around Big Almaty Lake in the Tian Shan mountain.

A local volunteer rescue group claimed to have located the 27-year-old’s body near the Ayusai River Gorge on Tuesday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed on Wednesday it was assisting the family of man who had died in Kazakhstan.

“The Department is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian man who died in Kazakhstan,” a spokesperson said.

“We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

“Owing to our privacy obligations, we are unable to provide further comment.”

Kazakhstan is located in Central Asia and is popular among tourists for its remote hiking.

The Ayusai River Gorge is situated at about 2800m above sea level.
