Aussie snake catcher hailed a hero over meticulous rescue mission

It took over 40 minutes to free the exhausted creature.

An Aussie snake catcher has been hailed for her bravery and patience after working to free one of Australia’s most dangerous snakes from garden netting.

“Today I got a call to rescue this little guy who had been stuck for two days in Beaudesert,” Tiarnah Kingaby from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 wrote online on Saturday. “I was very gentle with him and the process took me about 40 minutes.”

In a series of photos and videos, the eastern brown snake can be seen entangled in green netting. Sitting on the ground, Tiarnah methodically and slowly pulls the material off him with scissors and tweezers while holding his head in place.

In sharing the incident on Facebook, the young woman described the snake as “highly venomous and capable of a fatal bite if handled or harassed”, but said this one was calm out of sheer exhaustion.

“He had been trying to free himself for two days and was exhausted,” she said in a comment. “He wouldn’t understand I was helping and would have been frightened by my presence and contact. If I wasn’t holding, he would have likely bitten out of fear. He definitely livened up a bit once he was free.”

Once the snake was in the snake bag, Tiarnah took him to a wildlife hospital for treatment. On Monday she was called back to the facility to pick him up.

“He’s on about three weeks of antibiotics,” she explained. “Back to the vet after that for a check over and hopefully release soon after!”

She’s now urging Aussie residents to only use wildlife-safe garden netting.

Snake catcher praised: 'Mammoth effort'

After posting the images and videos on Facebook, Tiarnah was hailed for her actions.

“Superstar, you’ve done well!” one person wrote. “Oh wow, what a mammoth effort, thank you for saving him!” another said, while others referred to the “impressive job” she did to “save this poor guy”.

“Your care and compassion for our snakes is incredible,” someone else commented. “Very brave of you,” another wrote.

While it’s been a busy time for Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7, on October 9 the company posted a video of another snake caught in the same netting covering the garden bed.

“Same house, same day, same net, different snake,” the snake catchers wrote. “Friday afternoon Giffo returned to a property he went to that morning and this time another eastern brown snake in the same netting as that morning!

“This large eastern brown snake would have followed the scent of the other brown snake that went through earlier in the day, and sadly got stuck as well!”

Fortunately the professionals were able to free this one as well and release it into the wild after a check over.
