Aussie Mayor 'facepalms' over Ampol's road marking mistake

A new service centre on the freeway south of Sydney has motorists confused with car park road arrows appearing to point the wrong way.

An Aussie mayor was left "facepalming" after being made aware of confusing road markings at a new Ampol service centre on a freeway.

The local resident who first spotted the Pheasants Nest service centre car park road markings shared a photo online of painted arrows which bewildered thousands of members of the local community.

Matt Gould, Mayor of Wollondilly Shire Council, which sits on the south western outskirts of Sydney, quickly investigated the issue and advised the community that the back to front arrows were "only temporary".

Locals are baffled

People had shared just how hilarious they thought it was that someone could have gotten the road directions so wrong.

"I'm not the only one who noticed," laughed one person.

"Was there last week, turned in and wondered why there was a car facing me," another commented.

"Ummmmm! Confusing!!" said a third.

Council says they're not responsible

Some believed the council were to blame, but Mayor Gould quickly explained the arrows had "been done by Ampol as the owners of the site, not council" and further clarified that the relevant certificates were issued by a private certifier.

"[Ampol] informed me it’s only temporary markings to manage some issues whilst the site is still under construction, and they finish off the other parking/truck areas. They said they will be resprayed to the permanent (normal) markings by the end of November as soon as that work is done," he continued.

Aussies known for confusing road signs

Road markings are not usually pointing in the wrong direction, but Aussies are still known for having complex and bizarre road signs that leave drivers confused.

Recently in NSW, one local was stumped by a sign on the side of the road that had a caravan symbol above an arrow pointing down and another pointing to the left, despite there being no caravan park or other discernible amenity for campervans on the street.
