'Twisted, sick joke': Boy, 11, takes his own life after girlfriend 'fakes suicide' on social media

A little boy has tragically killed himself, after his girlfriend allegedly faked her death in a ‘suicide prank’ in the US.

His 13-year-old girlfriend allegedly faked her own suicide using social media, prompting the 11-year-old to take his own life.

Charges are pending against a juvenile, after the boy’s mother claimed a social media prank led to her son’s death.

On Thursday his mother, Katrina Goss said she found her son, Tysen Benz, dead in his room on March 14.

She alleges her son saw online posts and mobile phone messages suggesting his girlfriend had committed suicide, however this wasn't the case.

Ms Goss alleges the girlfriend and some friends orchestrated the prank, however it was not clear who will face charges.

"She had pranked her own death," Ms Goss, 41, alleged.

"I don't know what possessed her to do such a weird prank. It's a twisted, sick joke."

Detroit Police Captain Michael Kohler said the unnamed juvenile would be charged in Marquette County with telecommunication services-malicious use and using a computer to commit a crime.

Police would not release the age of the juvenile charged or comment on what relationship the person had with the boy.

The prosecutor's office declined to comment.

Ms Goss alleged that when her son saw posts about his girlfriend's death, he replied on social media that he was going to kill himself.

She alleged those involved in the prank failed to alert anyone about her son's comments.

"The whole thing happened in about 40 minutes," Ms Goss said.

"He was fine and then I found him. I don't know what she said she did to herself."

Tysen was rushed to a hospital but he tragically died.

"Social media harassment, bullying and pranking is a huge issue," Ms Goss said.

"The way it's used nowadays, kids are de-sensitised to social media and it really does hurt people."

“My son Tysen Benz was an 11-year-old student, athlete, comedian, friend, brother, charismatic and all around amazing child,” a Go Fund Me post made in memory of Tysen stated.

The fundraiser has seen $33,000 donated in two weeks.

“He clung on with the help of life support until Tuesday April 4th. He has now been set free and can Rest In Peace. He was loved by everyone he knew and he will absolutely never be forgotten.

“Our family is completely heartbroken. I urge families to speak out, reach out and communicate with your children about life's precious gift and the dangers of the Internet and texting and how telecommunications can have the same effects as speaking face to face.”
