Anglesey: Penny Mordaunt may use sword to open an Aldi
Penny Mordaunt has said she may cut the ribbon with a sword if a new Aldi opens in a north Wales town.
The Leader of the House of Commons was responding to an invite from Ynys Môn Conservative MP Virginia Crosbie, who has long campaigned for an Aldi store to open in Amlwch, Anglesey.
Ms Mordaunt famously carried a 17th Century ceremonial blade at the Coronation of King Charles III.
"I will be happy to do all I can to help," she said.
During business questions in Parliament on Thursday Ms Crosbie said: "For years, the town of Amlwch has been forgotten, but not on my watch.
"Along with a local resident, Mandy Jones, I have launched a campaign to get Aldi to come to Amlwch to give my constituents the opportunity to shop locally."
She then asked Ms Mordaunt to join in the cutting of the ribbon, should her campaign prove successful.
"I congratulate my honourable friend on all her achievements," Ms Mordaunt replied.
"I will be very happy to do all I can to help her latest campaign, which sounds like a good one.
"I hope that if I am able to attend I will be able to help cut the ribbon - perhaps with a sword."
Aldi has been contacted for comment.
