'Selfless' ambulance officers grant dying dad his final wish

A Perth widow has paid tribute to the hospital transport drivers who granted her terminally-ill husband his dying wish as he made his way home from hospital for the final time.

Father-of-four Chris Shaw, 45, had just received the news his battle with stomach cancer was coming to an end and made the decision he would see out his final days in the comfort of his own home, Nine News reported.

Accompanied by his wife Kylie Shaw, the pair were travelling home via ambulance when, shortly after setting off, they made an impromptu request of paramedics.

"I thought, 'What have I got to lose to ask the question?'“ Ms Shaw told the Today Show on Monday, a year on from Chris’ death.

They had asked ambulance officers Jade McGlew and Jesse Roulston if they would make a detour to Chris’ favourite beach so he could enjoy the view one final time.

The couple’s poignant request was granted by the ambulance officers –– a gesture Ms Shaw says she will never forget.

"Jade [McGlew] and Jesse [Roulston] were absolutely amazing. They knew this was going to be his last wish. It was one of the most selfless acts anyone could have done for us,” she said.

Ms McGlew and Mr Roulston, appearing with Ms Shaw on the breakfast show on Monday, brushed off praise for their actions, saying they were “very blessed” just to be a part of the special moment.

“It was quite emotional. We observed him just in utter bliss, enjoying the sunshine,” Ms McGlew said.

Ms Shaw also spoke of the bucket list her late husband had left for his wife and his four young children to complete once he’d gone.

He urged his family to travel more and spend more time together, as well as continue to raise awareness of the non-profit organisation No Stomach for Cancer.

"It's those sorts of things on his bucket list that he wanted us to do. So it's a very hard list, to be honest to go through,” she said.
