How this amateur painting started an internet craze
A seemingly innocuous picture of a mum holding an amateur painting has led to a bizarre art inception.
A man posted a picture of his mum holding the painting on Reddit and captioned it: “My [mum] painted this and said no one would like it. It’s her [second] painting.”
Artist Kristoffer Zetterstrand then started a chain reaction after posting a picture to Reddit of his painting of the mum, Cindi Decker, holding her artwork.
“I painted somebody’s [mum],” he wrote.
That painting then triggered a domino effect, with Canadian student Laila Amer then painting a picture of Zetterstrand holding a painting of Ms Decker holding her own artwork.
“Took a while and not perfect,” she wrote on Reddit.
“But I painted the guy who painted the other guy’s [mum].”
A man then painted a picture of Ms Amer holding her painting, which led to artist Traci Sethre painting a picture of him.
Artist Travis Simpson then wanted part of the action, painting a photo of Sethre holding a picture of the man holding a picture of Amer holding a picture of Zetterstrand holding a painting of Ms Decker holding her original painting.
“When it sinks in that I stayed up most of the night to paint a meme for internet points,” he wrote.
Ms Decker joined Reddit to thank those for a “crazy week”.
“You guys are awesome,” she wrote.
Redditors thanked her for starting the “wholesome” thread.
“I wonder if anyone refound their love of painting,” one commented.
