Alleged gunman nabbed after two months
A Queensland fugitive will face court after he allegedly kidnapped a man while threatening him at gunpoint before crashing his car in Sydney’s inner-west.
Mitchell James Wilson, 27, has been on the run from police since April when he was allegedly involved in a series of firearm and arson incidents in Brisbane.
It is not known when he crossed over the border after Queensland authorities began their manhunt almost two months ago.
The 27-year-old allegedly entered another man’s vehicle on Old Canterbury Road in Dulwich Hill just before 8pm on Thursday and demanded that he drive his car.
The man, 38, made the frantic call to police after he managed to escape the car a few kilometres down the road in Campsie.
The alleged offender drove off before crashing into a parked car in the nearby suburb of Earlwood.
Police pursued him on foot before arresting him and taking him to hospital.
He has since been charged with kidnapping, robbery while armed with a dangerous weapon, possess loaded firearm in a public place and possess unauthorised firearm.
Queensland police, who described the man as “irrational and particularly unpredictable” in April, will apply for Mr Wilson’s extradition back to Queensland once his proceedings in NSW are completed, a spokesman said on Friday.
Queensland Police Detective Andrew Massingham praised the efforts of NSW police for their efforts in apprehending the 27-year-old.
“From what we understand, NSW Police acted swiftly in apprehending and arresting this man in relation to other offences committed overnight,” he said.
He was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
