Alarming find on X-ray after patient complains of stomach ache
Doctors in India were shocked after an X-ray revealed what was causing a 58-year-old man’s stomach ache.
Dyamappa was rushed to hospital by his family, complaining of vomiting and abdominal discomfort.
Based on his symptoms, doctors did an X-ray and endoscopy, which involves inserting a thin tube down a patient’s throat and into the esophagus.
Inside his stomach, medics found 187 coins.
“He had been swallowing these coins for the last two to three months,” Dr Eshaw Kalaburgi from Hangal Sri Kumareshwar Hospital in Bagalkot said.
“The stomach was dilated enormously. Lots of coins were stuck in different places of the stomach. So we decided to operate on him.”
Dyamappa, from Lingsugur in the Raichur district, underwent a two-hour surgery where doctors were able to successfully remove all of the money which had a combined weight of 1.5kg.
“Following the operation, he was treated for water deficiency and other minor issues [but] the patient is stable and is talking as of now,” Dr Kalaburgi, who performed the surgery, said.
“These are rare cases,” he added. “It’s a first-of-a-kind case for me in my 40 years of service.”
Remarkably, it is not the most coins found in a stomach in Indian surgery. In 2017, surgeons removed 263 coins and 100 nails from a 35-year-old man’s stomach.
Maksud Khan was admitted to hospital with abdominal pain before an endoscopy revealed the startling find. Doctors also discovered dozens of shaving blades, shards of glass, stones and a six-inch piece of rusted iron shackle inside his stomach.
He underwent surgery “in the nick of time” according to medics, as some of the nails lodged had pierced his stomach, causing bleeding.
It’s believed Mr Khan had been suffering mental health problems before developing his bizarre eating habit.
While just this year, another man in India had 63 spoons removed from his stomach after complaining of a severe stomach ache. The 32-year-old’s family believe he was fed the spoons while undergoing treatment for drug addiction at a local clinic.
