Airbnb hosts offer free accommodation for NSW flood victims

Thousands of people across NSW have been told to evacuate over the past week, due to the torrential rain resulting in devastating floods.

More than 25,000 people across the state were told to leave their homes, while a further 60,000 are still on alert to evacuate if need be.

With so many displaced, Airbnb hosts have made a generous offer for free, temporary accomodation for those impacted by the floods.

"In coordination with emergency agencies and other local partners, Airbnb.org has activated its emergency response program to help people displaced by the flooding along the NSW coast," Airbnb said in a press release on Wednesday.

The program, which was previously known as Open Homes, will allow for Airbnb hosts to list their homes and offer free accomodation for those needing a place to stay.

People on the NSW coast, from Coffs Harbour to Wollongong will be able to stay temporarily at a host's home through the emergency response program until April 8.

“Through Airbnb.org’s disaster response program, new and existing Hosts on Airbnb can provide free, temporary housing to people displaced by the flooding," Derek Nolan, Airbnb’s Head of Public Policy for Australia said.

"We are grateful for the generosity of our Host community and proud to support Airbnb.org’s work as they continue to coordinate closely with local emergency agencies and other local partners to help those in need.”

What Airbnb hosts need to do to help flood victims

According to Airbnb's disaster relief page, all hosts need to do is provide a "welcoming space" for guests and help answer any questions if they come up, in addition to providing:

  • An entire home or apartment

  • A comfortable bed

  • Basic amenities and toiletries

  • Availability for 2 or more days in a row

AirBnb has provided a map, which shows the area in which they are encouraging hosts to sign up to provide relief.

The area stretches from Coffs Harbour to Wollongong and Airbnb says more than 300 people have offered up their space.

How do I get a space with Airbnb for free?

If you have been impacted by the floods, you can get free accommodation with Airbnb hosts until April 8.

To apply, you'll need an Airbnb account and once you're logged in, you'll be asked a few questions about how you have been impacted.

Airbnb will review the responses and then get back to people typically within 24 hours.

Once Airbnb approves you, then you will be able to see the places you can stay at for free. Once you find a place that seems suitable for you, you can reach out to the host.

Before accepting your reservation, the host may ask a few additional questions. Airbnb said you may need to contact a few hosts before being confirmed.
