'He didn't protect her': Mother's anguish over daughter's crash death

A court has heard a man who was evading police when he crashed his car and killed his girlfriend had been unlicensed for 14 years.

Bianca Thompson was 17 years old when her boyfriend Anthony Dixon, then 34, slammed into an oncoming vehicle last September.

Dixon was being pursued by police near Ballarat when he drove through an intersection and crashed, killing Ms Thompson.

Bianca Thompson's mother says her life was shattered the moment her daughter died.

"He was 17 years older. He didn't protect her, in the end his behaviour lead to her death," Kathy Thompson told the County Court.

A jury found Dixon, 35, guilty of culpable driving causing death.

He claims the couple had been arguing moments before the crash and Ms Thompson had been trying to harm herself.

But the prosecution said he was trying to evade police.

At the time of the crash, Dixon was behind the wheel of an unregistered and unroadworthy car and had drugs in his system.

The father-of-one hadn't held a licence for 14 years and had multiple convictions for drink driving.

Judge Elizabeth Gaynor said Dixon "had been found guilty after displaying, it has to be said, a pretty blatant disregard for road rules".

He is due to be sentenced in two weeks with the maximum sentence for his crime being 20 years behind bars.
