Video released of horrific moment self-driving Uber strikes and kills pedestrian

WARNING, DISTRESSING CONTENT: Disturbing footage has been released of the moment a self-driving Uber killed a pedestrian crossing the road with her bicycle.

Harrowing dashcam footage shows the vehicle driving along a deserted road in Tempe, Arizona, US, at night before a woman appears in the headlights in the middle of the road.

The short clip, released by Tempe Police, shows the car failing to slow down before the woman glances up moments before she is struck.

Footage from inside the Uber, which had a safety operator behind the wheel at the time, shows him glancing downwards and out of the window.

Seconds later the operator's facial expression turns to a look of shock as he notices the fast approaching pedestrian.

The woman was hospitalised and later died from her injuries, police said.

The incident prompted the ride-hailing company to suspend its autonomous vehicle program across the United States and Canada.

"Our hearts go out to the victim's family," an Uber spokesperson said.

"We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident."

Sunday's accident was the first fatal self-driving car crash involving a pedestrian.

In September, US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao released new guidelines that permit more testing of self-driving cars and address regulation between the federal government and states.
