'Not the best alarm clock': Woman woken by huge snake at 4am

It wasn't the typical alarm clock for one Queensland woman when she was woken at 4am only to find a huge carpet python slithering along her bookshelf.

Jaclyn Rye, from Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, was woken on Wednesday morning to the sound of her hour glass falling off the shelf in her bedroom.

Ms Rye didn't think anything of it at first and grabbed a broom to begin cleaning up the mess.

However, it didn't take long for her to realise who the unwanted culprit was - a carpet python who was crawling along a curtain rod.

Carpet pythons aren't venomous but it doesn't mean that Ms Rye wasn't shocked at her discovery.

"I turned on my light and happened to glance up at my curtains and stretched out over the curtain rod was this whopping great snake," Ms Rye told Yahoo7.

"I froze for a second then I ran to my dad's room and woke him up to tell him. I was just like 'nope, nope, nope, this is not happening'. I didn't know if it was dangerous or not so I was pretty scared."

Ms Rye and her dad decided to leave the snake, who they named Cleopatra, as it was as it seemed content.

At about 4.45am the snake began to move and not wanting to let it get into a tricky spot, they rang Snake Catcher Stuart McKenzie who made it to the home in about 15 minutes.

"This would probably scare anyone I reckon," he says in a video posted to his Facebook page.

"Not the best alarm clock to be woken with. It's the last thing you probably want in your bedroom at 4am in the morning."

The video shows Mr McKenzie collect the snake from the top of Ms Rye's bookshelf and put it into a bag.

"We'll take him back to the bush where he belongs," he said.

People have been left gobsmacked at the python and have questioned how it got into the home in the first place.

"Lived here 22 years and never seen one around here before this," Ms Rye replied to a comment.

"The garage roller door was accidentally left open a crack that night. We have security screen doors and windows that are always closed. Like I said, first snake in 22 years."

Ms Rye said it was one of her brother's tools that was left too far out and caused the garage to stay open with about a 10cm gap.
