How man's attempt to cash winning lotto ticket landed him in jail

A man who allegedly stole a winning lottery ticket from a New York deli tried to cash it in the next day at the same store.

The 31-year-old suspect was arrested on March 12 after being linked to the incident and faces charges of burglary, grand larceny and criminal mischief in the third degree, US outlet QNS reported.

According to the report, the man allegedly gained access to a construction site on February 1 where he cut a hole in the drywall that was separating the site from the adjacent storefront of the deli.

He then climbed through the hole, entered the deli and removed about $6485 from the registers and $4500 worth of lottery tickets.

It wasn't until the following day that an employee at the deli had noticed the business had been ransacked.

Later that same day, the man entered the store during business hours in an attempt to cash in a scratch-off lottery ticket.

But the serial number of the winning ticket matched the serial number of a ticket that was reported stolen, prosecutors said.

He was arrested just over a month later and is being held on $97,000 bail.

According to law enforcement sources, the man has been linked to other commercial burglaries in the area.
