Pilot and passenger's lucky escape after plane overturns during emergency landing

Two people have been fortunate to escape with minor injuries after a light plane made an emergency landing in the Northern Territory on Sunday afternoon.

A pilot and his passenger were left shaken after the light aircraft they were in overturned on boggy ground during an attempted emergency landing about 37 kilometres northwest of Batchelor, CareFlight Top End said.

They only received minor injuries including cuts and bruises, a spokesperson for the rescue service said.

It is thought the aircraft had experienced issues with the engine prior to the incident.

"It is believed the male pilot and his female passenger, both in their early 50s, ran into engine problems in their small light aircraft on a flight from Crab Claw Island to Batchelor," a statement on the CareFlight Top End Facebook page said.

A spokesperson said the service was tasked at about 4pm on Sunday.

"Tasked by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the Top End Rescue Helicopter with a flight doctor and flight nurse on board arrived at the crash scene at around 4.45pm." the statement said.

The pair were airlifted to Batchelor by CareFlight's Top End Rescue Helicopter.
