Outrage over man's silent Women's Day protest

A man wearing a face mask while travelling on a Melbourne tram has enraged social media with his silent International Women's Day protest.

On Thursday, Galetea Young shared a photo to Facebook of a suspender-wearing man on a city centre tram wearing the surgical mask with the words "Never Support Women" written across it.

Ms Young said she frequently sees the man with different masks on, recalling how he had "No" written on one during last year's same-sex marriage postal plebiscite.

"Whenever I catch the tram to and from work I see this guy," Ms Young wrote on a photo taken on March 1.

"I honestly don't know what to say."

The man's identity, his true intention and the seriousness of his protest are not known but he re-donned the misogynistic surgical mask again for International Women's Day.

Photos of the suspender-wearing man, who was riding the 109 tram in the inner-northern suburb of Brunswick, were shared on the Facebook page on Thursday 'Feminism & Decolonisation' and garnered almost 1500 shares.

The silent protester was criticised in the comments with people saying he was "embarrassing".

"Makes me embarrassed on two counts. To be a Melburnian and a bloke," one man wrote.

One woman wrote: "He forgets that a woman gave birth to him. He may have a partner or daughter one day."

Ms Young said no one on the tram said anything to the man and he sat in silence for the trip.

"Everyone on the tram did nothing. They didn't even notice," she told the Daily Mail.

"I didn't really know how to react. He just always sits there quietly, doesn't draw attention other then his mask."
