Large swan brings highway traffic to a halt

A large swan has held up traffic for Monday morning commuters in New Zealand.

New Zealand's Transport Agency (NZTA), which regularly tweets traffic updates, shared video of the large bird blocking two lanes of traffic on the Northern Motorway in Auckland on Monday about 7.30am (local time).

Police were eventually able to get the swan off the road. NZTA said police inched the patrol car closer to the bird and managed to guide it away.

The swan was later filmed walking on the side of the road with a police car alongside it.

NZTA said no was injured. It's not known why the swan was on the road.

It follows a similar incident in 2015 where the NZTA warned motorists to be careful of a large black swan lurking in a southbound lane on the Upper Harbour Freeway, not far from the Northern Motorway.

In 2016 an ostrich dashed down a busy motorway into five lanes of traffic along the Federal Highway in Kuala Lumpur.

The large bird, known as Chickaboo, jumped out of the window of a car but was eventually returned to a farm where she now roams free.
