Dying man's final wish to marry his sweetheart comes true on his deathbed

A man with terminal illness was granted his dying wish this week - to marry the love of his life.

Donald Jett, from Pennsylvania in the US, has terminal renal failure and doctors say he doesn't have much time left.

But Mr Jett found the strength to tick off one item on his list before he dies: marrying his girlfriend, Julie Brown.

While the pair met over 24 years ago in a bar, Ms Brown was married at the time and they didn't start dating until after they reconnected three years ago.

When they saw each other again for the first time, Mr Jett asked how Ms Brown had recognised him.

"[I said] 'your eyes, I’ll never forget them',” Ms Brown told American broadcaster WNEP.

The couple's relationship hasn't been easy, particularly in the last year.

“Julie took care of him and he’s done pretty amazing, for the most part. But the last year has been really hard,” Registered Nurse Jami Cordell said.

After Jami and the other nurses heard that the couple wanted to get married, they jumped into action and made it happen.

“We got a free cake, we got free flowers. It’s been amazing,” Ms Cordell said. They even found Ms Brown a dress.

“I’ve been waiting 20-something years for Donald to ask me to marry him,” Ms Brown said. "It was like a fairytale."

Mr Jett didn't talk all day to make sure his voice was strong enough to say "I do".

"She looked amazing. That was my baby. I know this was her day but it was mine, too," Mr Jett said.
