Man dies after being 'sucked into' MRI machine

An Indian man has died after he was reportedly sucked into an MRI machine at a hospital.

Rajesh Shyamji Maru, 32, was visiting his sister's mother-in-law at the BYL Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday about 8.30pm when he entered the MRI room carrying an oxygen cylinder, NDTV reports.

The 32-year-old's brother-in-law, Harish Solanki, claimed a ward boy had asked Mr Maru to bring the oxygen tank into the room.

Mr Maru was allegedly told the machine had been switched off. Metal, including jewellery, buttons and zippers, aren't allowed in the MRI room.

However, the machine had been switched on, and witnesses reported Mr Maru was pulled towards the machine with "great force".

His hand reportedly became stuck in the machine, along with the cylinder, triggering a large oxygen leak and severely injured the 32-year-old.

Mr Solanki and the ward boys pulled Mr Maru out of the MRI machine but at this stage he was bleeding profusely. Mr Maru was taken to the emergency room but died shortly after.

"As he entered the room the MRI machine sucked him in due to the magnetic force as he had (an) oxygen cylinder with him. He died within two minutes," Mr Solanki said.

The 32-year-old's family has blamed the hospital for being careless.

The family has also been compensated about A$9,700, The Mumbai Mirror reports.

A spokesman said the hospital is investigating the incident.

Three hospital employees have had a police case filed against them for causing death by negligence.
