'Something just bit me': Queensland couple woken by snake in bed

A Townsville couple will probably be spending the rest of their summer sleeping with one eye open after waking up to find a snake in their bed.

Adele Mallard was sleeping in her Rangewood home on Tuesday morning when she felt something trying to bite her hamstring, the Townsville Bulletin reports.

"There’s something in the bed, it just bit me," she said to her husband. He then caught the snake in a pillowcase.

Ms Mallard said she “rolled over during the night” and thought the snake “didn’t appreciate that”.

The couple managed to go back to sleep after the encounter.

Despite the scary wake-up call, Ms Mallard said it would have been worse if she was woken by her biggest fear - spiders.

Snake catcher David Barwell said the snake was a harmless spotted python.

According to Australia Zoo, the spotted python is one of Australia’s smallest pythons and is normally found in woodlands, shrubs and rocky outcrops along the east coast between Queensland and northern New South Wales.

They normally eat small mammals along with birds and lizards. They are also sometimes sold as pets.
