Neighbours beg elderly man to leave his burning home
A Gold Coast hinterland man has risked his life to save an elderly neighbour who refused to abandon his burning home.
The fire took hold of the rural Springbrook property on Saturday, with exploding cars and petrol drums fuelling the blaze.
The elderly owner, named Merv, refused to leave the blaze before he could save his prized possessions.
"Come out, mate! Come on, it's going to blow up. Come out," a woman can be heard begging him.
Mobile phone footage shows how desperate onlookers pleaded with Merv to come outside and leave his WWII Jeep he was trying to save.
She urges a man to go in and grab him, as huge plumes of smoke blanket the home.
The good Samaritan took matters into his own hands and jumped the fence to pull the man away from the inferno.
Exhausted, Merv finally exits the property slumped over, with burns to his head, arms and legs.
Smoke could be seen kilometres away as 14 fire crews used all their might to put it out.
Merv's family had lived on the property for generations, running transport and school buses in the local area.
Paramedics treated both Merv and the neighbour for burns at the scene.
