Bowl of soup helps catch a wife who allegedly murdered her husband

A bowl of soup has lead investigators to accuse a wife of her husband's murder.

Swathi, 28, from Telangana, India, had reportedly hatched an elaborate plan with her lover, identified only as Rajesh to kill her husband Sudhakar Reddy, 32.

The pair had been married for three years and have two children, but police say Swathi had an affair with Rajesh, leading them to plan to kill her husband and get his property.

Police officer DSP A Lakshminarayana told Gulf News that Reddy had learned about his wife’s affair a few days before his murder and that Swathi attacked him with a blunt object when he returned home on November 26.

She called Rajesh who arrived and the pair allegedly killed Reddy together, took him into the forest in a rolled up mat and burnt the body.

Two days later, Swathi threw acid on Rajesh's face and body in an attempt to make him look like her husband - a move police say could be inspired by the 2014 Indian film Yevadu, meaning ‘who’ where one of the characters has plastic surgery to assume the identity of another man.

She apparently threw the acid with Rajesh's blessing. The plan was for Rajesh to have plastic surgery and pretend to be her husband.

While Rajesh was being treated in hospital, police say Mr Reddy's family grew suspicious of Rajesh who they assumed was Mr Reddy after he refused to have mutton soup they had brought in.

They were shocked when he told the hospital staff that he is vegetarian. Swati's husband was non-vegetarian.

The family then grew suspicious of other things Rajesh was doing and notified police.

When questioned, Swathi reportedly confessed to killing her husband with Rajesh's help.

Swathi was subsequently arrested and a police officer said Rajesh will be arrested after he is discharged from the hospital.
