WATCH: Experts baffled as dozens of octopuses invade beach

Unsuspecting beachgoers have been baffled by dozens of octopuses emerging from the sea in the middle of the night.

Videos have been shared of the sea creatures, who were spotted at New Quay beach in Wales on Friday night.

Several octopuses died in the bizarre invasion, which has so far left experts puzzled.

Brett Stones, who runs SeaMor Dolphin Watching Boat Trips, filmed the creatures and said he’d never seen anything quite like it.

“They were walking on the tips of their legs,” he told The Telegraph.

“Perhaps it’s because the sea has been quite rough recently but I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

James Wright, curator at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, said that there may have been “something wrong” with the octopuses, also suggesting that the blame may lie in recent storms.

“As the areas where they are exhibiting this odd behaviour coincides with the two areas hit by the two recent low pressures depressions and associated storms of Ophelia and Brian, it could be supposed that these have affected them,” Mr Wright said.

“It could simply be injuries sustained by the rough weather itself or there could be a sensitivity to a change in atmospheric pressure.”

Dr Steve Simpson, a lecturer in marine biologist at the University of Bristol, described the behaviour as “extremely odd”.

He added: “They are fairly vulnerable on land and it’s hard to imagine they have found a new food source.”
