A man shot outside a car shop in Melbourne's west has died in hospital, while a second victim remains seriously injured.

The victims suffered serious gunshot wounds shortly after 2pm on Friday at Westwood tyre store when several rounds were fired, police and paramedics say.

The gunman sped off in a white vehicle before nearby workers ran over to the scene after hearing the gunshots, discovering the men next to a black Mercedes SUV.

"I was in the office and all I heard was four or five shots and then screaming so I came out and saw a guy on the ground," worker Russell said.

Following a short search for the vehicle which left the scene, police have confirmed a man has been arrested and is assisting with investigations.
