'What is wrong with my chicken?' Coles customer disgusted to find 'green discolouration' on breast
A Coles customer was horrified by a strange, green tinge on the chicken breast she picked up from the supermarket giant.
A Geelong woman didn’t beat around the bush when she discovered the unusual marking, asking Coles “what on earth is wrong with my chicken?”
A Coles spokesperson was quick to address the Facebook post, saying it could be a result of a chicken “flapping its wings too much”.
“This looks like deep pectoral myopathy (DPM),” Coles replied.
“Our National Quality team has advised that this is a green discoloration of the flesh than can make it anywhere from bright lime green to a deep khaki colour.
“This is caused by a degenerative disease in the chicken’s muscles when swelling occurs as a result of oxygen deficiency.
They reassured the woman that the marking is not harmful and that the taste of the chicken “would not be altered”.
One Facebook user suggested it looked “like garlic butter”, while another offered a less appetising description.
“Looks like puss,” the woman wrote.
Coles went on to ask the woman for the barcode number before offering her a full refund or replacement.
