Sydney woman crushed by 100kg statue in freak holiday accident
A Sydney woman has been injured in a freak accident in Spain when a 100 kilogram wooden statue landed on her head.
Siobhan Quinn, 26, had stopped underneath a Majorca beach boardwalk while her boyfriend Cameron Danzey went to find a bathroom on Wednesday afternoon.
As she waited, someone standing above toppled a massive "pot plant-style" statue from above and the radiographer was crushed underneath, fracturing multiple vertebrae.
"It fell straight on her head," Ms Quinn's mother, Erica Quinn, told Yahoo7.
"It was so lucky a couple of paramedics on holiday were right there and came to her assistance straight away."
Ms Quinn, who was just ending a three-month European holiday, was rushed to a local hospital for scans, where doctors initially found four fractured vertebrae.
But further tests on Thursday found she had several compound fractures, including two in her neck and three in her spine, and could not walk.
Her devastated mother said the 26-year-old can wiggle her toes and medical staff believe her spinal cord is intact.
"They're concerned about soft tissue damage and are trying to discuss what sort of back brace [she will need]," Erica said.
Erica said she has packed a bag and is now on "standby" while doctors decided whether Ms Quinn will need to remain in Spain.
"We're trying to get her home," she said. "But she's in a hell of a lot of pain."
Despite the horrific circumstances, Erica said her daughter is in "okay" spirits and is remaining positive.
Her boyfriend has started a GoFundMe campaign to try and raise $60,000 to cover her medical costs.
He said Ms Quinn was just out of her travel insurance period as she had planned to move to London the following day to find a job as a radiographer.
"She is having to cut her dream short and return home, after paying thousands in registration fees and now hospital fees," Mr Danzey said.
