Remarkable tale of Aussie survival emerges from Hurricane Irma
A Queenslander has survived an encounter with the most powerful hurricane to strike the Atlantic in a decade.
Hurricane Irma slammed into the Caribbean a week ago, but the tale of Steven Hall's remarkable story and the video he filmed are only emerging now.
The region that was paradise has now been turned into a wasteland.
Steven Hall filmed video from his drone before Irma arrived and left the area devastated.
However, it’s what the region looked life after the category 5 hurricane passed through the British Virgin Islands that’s most shocking.
The confronting footage shows the resort completely destroyed.
“Myself and five other crew mates sailed south on two yachts to escape the eye of the storm out of the British Virgin Island and obviously you can see this is what we came back to,” Steven said in part of his video diary.
“Just simply devastating."
Any vessels that remained in the devastated area are now smashed.
Steven, from Marcoola on the Sunshine Coast, has spent the past week salvaging boats to accommodate doctors who've flown in to help save lives.
“The people of the British Virgin Island have banded together and they’re struggling," the Queenslander said.
“People have lost everything but positive attitude of all people here is amazing."
Steven was given a two hour sailing lesson before being asked to skipper the yacht out of Irma’s way.
And now with another hurricane about to smash the Caribbean he’s doing it again.
“Well Maria is on her way. So we’re about to get hit by another one so yeah, we’re going to start sailing south again and hopefully get out of the way of it,” he said about the latest challenge that he is about to undertake.
