Why you have been pronouncing iPhone X all wrong

The much-anticipated 10-year anniversary iPhone has been revealed, fit with facial recognition, "super retina" display and wireless charging.

But its name is baffling some Apple lovers, with many struggling to understand why the device is called the "X."

After a presentation at Apple's "spaceship" campus in California, much of the confusion was revealed with company executives pronouncing the device as the "iPhone ten."

The "X" is the Roman numeral for ten and its use in the name makes sense with the phone paying homage to the device's 10 year anniversary.

Apple lovers will also know the Mac OS X computer operating system is pronounced as Mac OS 10 and may have taken that as a clue.

It comes with an edge-to-edge 5.8-inch (14.7-centimetre) "super retina" display that has improved resolution, and uses facial recognition to unlock the device.

All three new handsets will be capable of wireless charging and are adapted for augmented reality with more powerful processors and cameras.

Unfortunately for consumers, the increase in technology means a considerable increase in price.

The iPhone X will be available in 64GB and 256GB and sell in Australia for $1579 and $1829, respectively.

Pre-orders open on October 27 and shipping begins on November 3.
