Hurricane Harvey: Floodwater sweeps six-month-old baby from mother's arms

A six-month-old baby is presumed dead after she was pulled from her mother's arms during the rising Hurricane Havrey floodwaters.

Fire chief Rick Stevens was among those helping two men who were tapped inside their car on the weekend when they heard someone crying for help.

A husband and wife had been trying to cross swift floodwater when they were swept away with their daughter.

Fire crews say they were attempting to leave New Waverly in Texas and head to Louisiana.

"As you can imagine, it's been really hard on our guys," Mr Stevens told American broadcaster KARE.

The parents had taken refuge in a tree while waiting to be rescued after their car got stuck in a patch of trees downstream for the bridge they were traveling on.

"They were in about 40 feet of water in a tree top," Stevens said.

"It took about three hours to get to them."

The baby girl hasn't been seen since she was pulled from her mother's arms.

"They were trying to get to the tree and hold on with the baby and the current swept the baby away," Stevens said.

If or when her death is confirmed, it will bring the total number of people feared dead from Hurricane Harvey to 51.
