Firefighter sneaks up to save woman sitting on edge of bridge

A quick-thinking Mississippi firefighter has saved a woman who was contemplating taking her own life.

The woman was seen sitting on the edge of a bridge when witnesses called emergency services in an attempt to rescue her.

She was overlooking the Mississippi River, American network Fox 9 reports.

At first attempt, two police officers spoke to the woman, trying to get her to get down off the ledge.

"She said she didn't feel like anyone loved her," officer Shawn Longen said.

"I assured here there were people who loved her, and if they were here they would be doing everything they could to get her to come to the other side of the railing."

St. Paul District Fire Chief Conrad Ertz arrived without being noticed.

Ertz edged his way closer to the woman without being noticed, grabbed her and pulled her to safety, video shows.

"What was going through my mind was I wanted this to end in a positive light so this individual had a second chance," Ertz said.
