WATCH: Cafe barista refuses to sell food to customer to give to homeless man

A train commuter has been left "gobsmacked" after a cafe worker refused to sell him a sandwich because he planned to give it to a homeless man.

Adrian Pinsent stopped in at a Costa Coffee shop in London's Waterloo Station to pick up a salad sandwich and a soft drink, but found himself arguing with staff as he tried to pay.

Mr Pinsent filmed the moment the barista told him they would be prosecuted if they sold him the food to then give to a homeless person.

"You won't get prosecuted!" Mr Pinsent can be heard saying in the video. "Because I as a paying customer want to buy some food for a homeless person, you won't let me buy it?"

He then asks the staff members if it is Costa Coffee policy and the barista tells him it comes from the security at the train station.

"Then I'll take it outside the station and give the guy some food," Mr Pinsent responds.

"Look, I've got a train to catch man, I'm going to put some money down on the counter and I'm taking this food."

Mr Pinsent posted the footage to Facebook and said the video wasn't even the "half of it" as the argument went on for about five minutes and only ended because he needed to catch a train.

A Costa Coffee representative responded to the video on Twitter.

"This is definitely not one of our policies and we're currently in the progress of investigating," the comment said.

In a statement, Costa Coffee told 7 News Online they do not have a policy restricting customers from buying food for the homeless.

"We believe the store was given misinformation, which has now been corrected,” the statement said.
