Shots reportedly fired at Manus Island detention centre, asylum seekers 'under attack'

It's claimed up to 100 shots have been fired at the Manus Island immigration detention centre, with asylum seekers under attack.

Police are responding to reports of a shooting incident after asylum seekers at the centre said shots were fired about 6.30pm local time, according to the ABC.

It's claimed an altercation broke out between local navy officers and detainees after a soccer match.

The Department of Border Protection and Immigration has been contacted for comment.

Australian staff were seen running for a boat moored nearby, while asylum seekers said they had hidden in their rooms as shots rang out, the ABC said.

Iranian refugee Amir Taghinia told ABC he was on a bus driving into the centre when he heard shots being fired.

"It's crazy, many people are in shock," he said.

"The Navy is shooting people."

The Refugee Action Coalition said it is concerned for the welfare of those left in the centre.

The group has said about 100 shots were fired about 6.30pm local time. It's also claimed a mob stormed the complex.

The group also said all staff had fled the compounds, leaving refugees and asylum seekers unprotected.

Greens Senator Nick McKim tweeted the news was "very disturbing".
