Fears 11 passengers slipped through airport security without screening

Authorities in the US fear 11 passengers at JFK Airport might have passed through a security checkpoint without being screened on Monday morning.

NBC New York reports that Transportation Security Administration agents appeared to have left a screening lane open at Terminal 5 at about 6am, officials said.

At least three people reportedly set off an alarm after activating the metal detector.

The trio were identified through security pictures and police were tasked to search for them, however none could be found in the terminal.

A further eight people are believed to have boarded flights without the proper screening.

The TSA released a statement over the apparent breach.

"The Transportation Security Administration is reviewing reports of a possible security incident this morning at John F Kennedy International Airport Terminal 5," a spokesperson said.

"Early reports indicate three passengers did not receive required secondary screening after alarming the walk through metal detector.

"All personal carry-on bags received required screening."

It is claimed security measures were conducted when passengers arrived at their destinations.

The statement continued: "We are confident this incident presents minimal risk to the aviation transportation system.

"Once our review is complete, TSA will take appropriate action."

Port Authority Police reportedly claimed they weren't notified about the possible breach for about two hours.
