Concerns for Queen's health as she continues to battle 'heavy cold'

Queen Elizabeth II's health remains a concern after it was revealed she may miss another church service due to her battle with a "heavy cold".

The 90-year-old royal will make a last minute decision on Sunday (local time) on whether she will attend 16th century St Mary Magdalene church, The Sun reported.

Buckingham Palace has declined to say if the world's longest-reigning monarch will be there.

It comes two weeks after the Queen, who is the symbolic head of the Church of England, missed a Christmas Day service for the first time in 30 years.

The Queen and her husband Prince Philip, 95, were both struck with an illness before Christmas, which caused her to miss a number of public appearances.

Royal sources claim the she has been hit with the persistent "hacking cough" that is said to be affecting hundreds of thousands throughout Britain, according to The Mirror.

It is believed the illness can't be treated using antibiotics with doctors only able to prescribe rest, food and fluids.

Philip attended both the Christmas and New Year services, but the Queen made no public appearance.

Elizabeth had previously attended the Christmas service at the church every year since the royal family started celebrating the event at Sandringham in 1988.

At the event, Princess Anne told well-wishers that her mother was feeling "better" as she attended church with her father.

However, Buckingham Palace have since assured the Queen missing the ceremony was a "precautionary measure" and not a cause for concern.

The Palace's last statement on the issue was released last Sunday.

"The Queen does not yet feel ready to attend church as she is still recuperating from a heavy cold," the statement read.

After more than six decades on the throne, the Queen has cut back on international tours but still regularly performs official duties around Britain.

The palace announced on December 20 that she would step down as patron of several charities and other organisations to reduce her workload.

The Queen's father, King George VI, died at the relatively young age of 56.

The Queen has maintained the popularity of the monarchy despite years of political, social and cultural change since she became Queen on Feb. 6, 1952, aged just 25.
