WATCH: Incredible moment pilot avoids near-miss on runway saving 439 lives

The incredible moment a Chinese pilot saved the lives of 439 people in a near-miss has been recreated on video.

The shocking footage shows the plane about to take off when it encountered an Airbus A330 in its path along the runway, reports the People's Daily Online.

Pilot He Chao made the brave decision to speed up and clear the other plane, avoiding a head-on crash by just 19 metres.

The manoeuver ultimately saved the lives of 439 people on board the aircrafts.

The pilot has since been awarded three million yuan ($580,000) for preventing the collision.

China Eastern Airlines also rewarded cabin crew with 600,000 yuan ($115,000).

The terrifying incident took place on runway 36L at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport on October 11.


An investigation launched by China's aviation authority, CAAC, found that air traffic control were at fault for the incident.

The authority has revoked the licenses of two air traffic controllers responsible for the incident and punished 13 air traffic control officials from The Eastern China Air Control Bureau.
