Top cops' inquest appearance delayed by 'legal issues'

Three senior police officers expected to front the Lindt siege inquiry will be delayed by two weeks due to a 'legal issue'.

A mistake from the counsel assisting coroner Jeremy Gormly will see Andrew Scipione, Catherine Burn and Jeff Loy instead make an appearance on August 15.

Families of the slain hostages requested in June that the three top ranking officers be called to give evidence, and now they will be forced to wait even longer to hear the testimonies surrounding the night that saw Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson killed.

The counsel told the inquest that an error prevented the officers from giving evidence until mid August.

The long-awaited evidence from the three most senior officers was expected to begin on Tuesday morning, with Acting Deputy Commissioner Jeff Loy scheduled to take the stand.

But by 11.30am the court's bar table remained empty, and a spokesman for the coroner confirmed parties were locked in argument over "a legal issue".

When Acting Deputy Commissioner Loy eventually does front the inquest, the NSW Coroner will question whether he inappropriately interfered - or failed to intervene when he ought to have - during the deadly Sydney stand-off.
