"Can't legislate for stupidity": Truck driver's astonishing U-Turn at Harbour Tunnel

In an astonishing piece of driving, a truck driver has performed a U-turn near the entrance to the Harbour Tunnel.

The manoeuvre was performed with a trailer attached and hundreds of vehicles backed up behind the driver.

At first, it inspired laughter but that turned to utter amazement as onlookers began to grasp what was happening.

“We didn’t really know what to think. We thought he might be stuck, might not know what he was doing,” one witness told 7 News.

Another said: "It didn’t really look like an easy thing to do, he was more like reversing, all zig-zaggy”.

Mercifully, it happened just after Wednesday morning's peak-hour traffic.

The driver righted the vehicle and took off with more than 1km of traffic at a standstill behind him.

"You can't legislate for stupidity. So my encouragement is obey the rules," NSW Premier Mike Baird said.

The owner of the landscaping business that the driver worked for was floored when 7 News sent him pictures of the incident.

Josh Perryman said his driver felt humiliated and apologised.

"Slammed on the breaks to stop and the chipper's kicked out behind him, turned him the whole way around facing the wrong way," Mr Perryman said

"I'd just like to apologise for any inconvenience."

Wet weather made for a dangerous and slow trip to work across Sydney on Wednesday.

A crash near Revesby triggered much worse delays on the M5, followed by more on the M7 in the afternoon.

That was just another day in Sydney - but the Harbour Tunnel U-turn was something exceptional.
