'Forever missed and loved': Grieving parents' emotional tribute to 'miracle' twin toddlers who drowned in fish tank

The heart-broken parents of the ‘miracle’ twins who drowned in a fish tank at their Scotland home released an emotional tribute to their ‘long-awaited soldiers’.

Sarah Aitken, 32, and Mervyn Scott, 30, are grieving the loss of their two-year-old boys, Shaun and Rhys, after they both fell in to the eight-foot tank on Saturday morning.

The couple turned to IVF treatment when they had trouble conceiving naturally and shared the excitement of the twins' premature birth over social media in 2013.

Police and detectives cordoned off the house over the weekend as they investigated the circumstances in which the young brothers died.

The twins were a miracle birth for parents Sarah and Mervyn.

The family is reportedly renting the home in the historic county of Fife from owner Keith Henderson, who operated a koi fish company from the property before leasing it to the young family, the Daily Mail reported.

Fife council documents allegedly show approved plans for two large eight-foot deep fish tanks and an observation area.

Health and Safety inspectors are surveying the property to determine whether or not an investigation needs to be launched to see if the landlord lacked duty of care.

Safety officials confirmed they are working alongside police and assisting them with their inquiries.

Ms Aitken and Mr Scott released a statement in which they expressed their gratitude to everyone that rushed to help on Saturday.

"We would like to thank everyone for their support at this unfortunate and difficult time.

"We give special thanks to all the medical staff, family, friends, neighbours and the police for their efforts, hard work and time spent helping and trying to revive our miracle babies.

"Both boys were long awaited little soldiers who were full of love, happiness, fun and cheek. Individually and together they have touched the lives of everyone they met.

"We along with our family and friends are still in shock and devastated at such a tragic loss from such a freak accident.

"They have been taken from us far too early and will be forever missed and loved."

The couple also requested privacy to grieve.
