Thirsty koala finds cold refreshment after Adelaide's scorching heatwave

Video posted online has proven it wasn't just humans who needed relief in Adelaide's excruciating heatwave, showing a thirsty koala drinking water from a gutter.

The koala had climbed down his tree to slurp up a cold refreshment, lapping the rain water up for 15 minutes after Adelaide's four-day record-breaking heat above 40 degrees.

The adorable moment was captured by Paul Jansen who witnessed the native Australian drinking the cold rain water flowing down a drain in Hope Valley, north of Adelaide.

The 41-year-old recorded the marsupial on Sunday morning and posted the video to Facebook posing the question, "How much can a koala bear drink?"

"I was driving down the road when I saw a moving koala drinking the running rainwater water down the drain," Paul told Yahoo7.

The photography enthusiast said he didn't see the koala come down from the tree but had to stop to film the rare occasion.

"When i saw the koala I did a u-turn and saw it just lapping up the water by the side of the road," Paul said.

“I didn’t know how they drank before, it reminded me of my dogs drinking."

“Our furry friends feel it more than us because they don’t have air conditioning,” Paul told Yahoo7.

He showed his two step-children the footage and were also amazed at the rare encounter.

“It’s a beautiful thing to see a koala drinking."

The haunting four-day heatwave in South Australia didn't only affect koalas.
