Stabbed to death in ambush: Sydney victim 'tried to speak' as he bled out

A Sydney man who was bashed and stabbed after being set upon by five men in an ambush in Fairfield East faded in and out of consciousness as a bystander tried desperately to save his life.

Homicide Squad detectives are on the hunt for a group of men who were allegedly armed with metal bars when they attacked the 35-year-old man on Belmore St in Fairfield East on Sunday.

He later died in hospital after the horrific attack described by the man who came to his aid as a "senseless killing".

"Why do people do this?" asked 67-year-old Derek Corney, who rushed to the man's aid when he saw him lying on the grass next to the road.

As the victim lay on the ground, Mr Corney used plastic bags and his hands to try to stop the man bleeding to death.

"I kept saying, 'Don't worry, the ambos are coming,' trying to comfort him and stop the flow of the blood, but he was bleeding everywhere," Mr Corney told Fairfax Media.

"I told him that he would be all right, I just wanted him to hear me, but he kept fading in and out of consciousness.

"He was trying to speak to me.

"He was bleeding from his chest and the side of his torso so I was trying to stop the blood with anything, plastic bags and my hands.

"It was a horrific experience."

A NSW Police spokesman said police were called to the street about 4.10pm following reports that a brawl had taken place and a man was lying on the street bleeding heavily.

Officers arrived to find the 35-year-old had gone into cardiac arrest after suffering multiple stab wounds to his body.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene, before taking him to Liverpool Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

A police spokesman confirmed the man died about 6pm on Sunday.

It’s unclear whether the man who died knew the group of men who attacked him.

It’s also unclear what the dispute was about.

The street was also the scene of another violent killing in early 2015.

In May, the body of 16-year-old Mahmoud Hrouk was located inside a rundown house on Belmore St.

The teen was allegedly sexually assaulted and beaten to the point that he was "unrecognisable".

A 22-year-old man was arrested over Hrouk’s death and was in custody charged with murder and aggravated assault.

Police were appealing for anyone with information on Sunday’s incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
