The victim, Brian Jones, was assaulted in his own home after he was confronted by a man trying to break in.

The intruder had three knives, including one attached to a PVC pipe and left behind a bag containing rope, a hammer and oil.

Witnesses have described the man as tall, aged in his early 20s, with messy hair. He had dark clothing, no shoes and his left arm was caked in mud.

Police are trying to track down witnesses who saw a stranger emerge from the swamp last Friday.

"I saw somebody coming out from the mud...very unusual," one witness told 7 News.

Detectives believe he was on the run after attacking Brian Jones in his own home.

Pictures from body cameras worn by the first police at the scene show the 63-year-old petrified and in pain just minutes after being repeatedly stabbed.

It was still dark when Brian heard a noise at the back of his home.

He was confronted by a man, trying to break-in.

"This person has said, distinctly said, that he was going to kill him, that person has also said that he was a broken man, which is of interest to us," Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Austin told 7 News.

The intruder had three knives, including one attached to a PVC pipe.

He also left behind a bag containing rope, a hammer and oil.

"It's unusual, this bag may not belong to this person, he may have stolen it from somewhere, so if someone identifies this bag, we'd like them to contact the police," Det Snr Sgt Austin said.
