"It's only a matter of time before someone is killed": Prison staff share chilling warning

South Australian prison staff have warned that it’s only a matter of time before someone gets killed, following another violent bashing in custody.

A Whistleblower told Seven News, vital medical equipment had been removed from prisons, and nurses were being poorly trained as a result of cost-cutting measures.

“Brutal bashings are not uncommon in our corrections system,” the whistleblower said.

The latest happened at Adelaide Remand Centre on Wednesday afternoon.

At least two prisoners went into the victim’s jail cell and beat him senseless.

“The found him… blood was pouring out of his ears and mouth,” the whistleblower said.

Despite the man’s injuries, the nurse on duty allegedly administered an anti epileptic seizure drug.

“Majority of nurses working within prison health are not emergency training and giving midazolam in such a scenario could possibly kill the person,” the whistleblower said.

The nurse, with more than 20 years experience, says ‘life saving’ medical equipment has been removed from emergency trolleys over the past two years – Why? Because paramedics and hospitals can do it.

“Management and the union have been warned that there will be a death in custody… It’s a cost cutting measure for the government,” the whistleblower said.

The CEO of the corrections department says police are investigating the claims further and would not comment further on the incident.
