Man’s best friend has proven himself yet again.

Figo, a golden retriever, saved his blind owner by throwing himself in front of a bus.

A mini bus driver failed to notice Audrey Stone,62, walking across an intersection in Brewster, Massachusetts,US.

Witnesses at the scene were shocked when the dog leapt in front of Ms Stone and “took a lot of the blow.”

Gas station manager Paul Schwartz told the Journal News: “I don’t know if (the driver) thought (Stone) was going to move faster, but it looks like the dog tried to take most of the hit for her.”

Brewster Police Chief John Del Gardo said Figo was calm during the ordeal.

“He did not want to leave her side. He stood right with her. He was there to save her,” he said.

Police photos of Monday's crash showed fur stuck to the bus' front wheel, according to the Journal News.

Figo suffered a leg injury that cut to the bone and his owner broke her ribs, fractured her ankle, and suffered a head injury.

Ms Stone and Figo are both on the mend and are expected to make a full a recovery from their injuries.
Figo will remain at a veterinary hospital until Ms Stone is able to care for him.
