Facepalm: Teen poses for selfie with drugs and stolen police hat

There is a long list of ways to avoid unwanted attention from the police.

At the bottom of that list is stealing a police officer's hat before posting to Facebook a photo of yourself wearing it while taking illegal drugs and giving the finger to the camera.

You should also avoid posting the words, "f--- the police" next to your snap.

One Northern Territory teenager apparently missed the lesson on how to not get tapped on the shoulder for stupid behaviour, however.

The teenager - who Yahoo7 News has chosen not to name - should be expecting a visit from NT police very shortly, after posting just such a image a week ago.

The News Corp reports the police are not especially impressed with the Facebook stunt.

Acting Commander Daniel Shean said the boy could expect a loud knock on his door very soon.

“In this instance it appears someone is in possession of stolen goods and possessing an implement to administer an illegal drug,” he said.

“If we were to locate cannabis, it’s reasonable to extend charges relating to illicit drug use.”

He said the teenager appeared to be oblivious to the fact he had posted potential evidence to a crime.

“Hopefully, they use this opportunity to think about their actions, and maybe focus their energy and enthusiasm on getting stuck into their school work and thinking about a future career,” Commander Shean said.

The bold stunt is still visible on the teenager's Facebook page but it does not seem to be winning him many fans.

"Dude, what the f--- is this," asked one poster.

"Why hasn't this been deleted yet?" asked another, five days later.

Other friends posted screenshots of media reports into the post, apparently in an effort to convince the young man to rethink the continued public status of the photograph.

It remained live as of midday today.
