Police are convinced that a shooting in Sydney's southwest late last night was a failed murder attempt with a very clear target.

The attacker or attackers opened fire on a couple sitting in a car at Greenacre.

The man, Bilal Helou, was hit several times and his girlfriend wounded on the shoulder.

Helou, 31, was taken to Bankstown hospital by a friend. He is lucky to survive the ambush as the bullets grazed his head.

Relatives were seen at the hospital demanding answers and launching their own attack on police.

Angry exchanges were captured by Seven News by someone purporting to be Helou's brother.

You f***ing dogs. You stand here like monsters. F*** you all. You're f***ing ignorant dude," the man is heard yelling.

The 31-year-old was taken to hospital by a friend.

Helou had been in his car with his girlfriend, 27-year-old Duha Choukchouk, when another vehicle pulled alongside.

Bilal Helou lives just 50 metres from where he was shot. It is believed he had arrived home with his girlfriend when they were ambushed.

Police say Helou is known to them and Ms Choukchouk was an innocent victim.

They will interview Helou when he is well enough.
